Valeri was quite good looking!

The floors at the time were either springs or foam blocks underneath, they mostly provide impact absorption, you can actually get more height off of a surface such as grass than off a spring floor. The spring can only return the energy put into it, and as with all mechanical systems, there are losses so it actually returns less energy than the athlete puts in.
From memory, I don't think Liukin won floor, I believe Vladimir Artemov won due to a much cleaner routine but the 3x was amazing.

It would be nice to know for sure if there were springs in the floor.
I've always felt spring floors were sort of cheating! Can all schools even afford them? When I was a gymnast, in the 70's, we used 1" foam wrestling mats, which still seems ideal to me. Other events required special equipment, but with floor ex you could do the same routine out in a field, provided it was flat and the grass well trimmed. I think this gave the event a certain purity and universality it has since lost.

@daboochmeister :-) definitely 0.5 for that squat and probably 0.3 for separation in the knees. Thats the entire value of the skill!!
