@asian897 There are no "South Korean defectors", South Koreans are allowed to leave South Korea as they please. It's called freedom of movement.

Looks like US is still much more liberal and understanding towards the emigrating people of North Korea than the myopic and biased South Korea that discriminates against them - who are also Koreans. Shame on South Korea.

@jwh30385 Well in the case of trying to defect from NK, concider yourself dead before you even think of crossing that border. The restrictions and penalties that apply are severe, which affects your whole family and sometimes even results in executions. It is just about impossible without substancial bribes for guards to even just look the other way. Not quite as easy as calling it "migrating".

This story is very near and dear to me. My father and his family as well as my korean part ancestors were from a region in North Korea. My father and his family were able to make it to the south okay, but had to restart everything. My father soon came to the USA and sent for his family. He often spoke of those times.
