Aussies enjoy eating the prawn crackers that often accompany Chinese take-away food. Here, I show you how easy it is to prepare them at home.

What you need:

- Box of uncooked prawn crackers (available from most supermarkets);
- Cooking oil (preferably peanut or sunflower);
- Deep pan or wok;
- Paper towel;
- Tongs.

Method:

Place one cup of cooking oil into a pan or wok and heat on medium or medium-high for approximatley 5-10 mins. Place an uncooked prawn cracker into the oil. If it does not turn into a cooked prawn cracker within a few seconds, the oil needs to be heated longer; wait a short time before trying again. When the cracker is cooked, use the tongs to take it out of the oil and place the cracker onto paper towel to soak up the run-off.

  • prawwn crackers are reall a great food to cook for kids and aldults. but what if the prawn cracers are to hard an cant get cooked.

  • @avery7785 I've found that once the box is open, you can't keep them for very long without needing to store them properly. Any leftover uncooked crackers should be placed into a dry, airtight container. Those that have lost their freshness may appear discoloured and will taste stale after you cook them.

  • need to try frying them again , after taking out the battery of the smoke alarm , as sensitive as a drug sniffing canine

  • @melkoebes I had one in the kitchen that I got rid off as it kept going off. Got others in the rest of the house anyway.

  • Lovely. No longer buying them ready made... ha ha ha. My kids consume them in packets :-) I wonder how they taste hot ? Great encouragement... and way to enjoy cooking something simple :-)

  • @Mytallpalmtree It's only about $1.20 to buy a packet and they make heaps. Cheers for the comment. : )
