Lucky #7

Hey everyone this was our 7th firing and everything went fantastic. We used hardwood in the first half of the firing, the flame and personality of the kiln was a little off but was firing well, switched to hemlock and pine and it took off. We wanted to smash 14 but were very happy with cone 13 down everywhere in the kiln top to bottom front to back. just a great firing. results will be on my blog in a while. http://timseeclay.blogspot.com/

Just seems like a huge waste of heat/energy coming out of that chimney.

@Blackoutx86 That length of flame and speed at which it enters is important to the finished look of the piece. It would be a waste if it were gas or something that doesn't leave an ember but with hard woods just the resin burns out giving that 20 seconds or so of long flame but the majority of the heat is from the coals. For the size of the kiln and the temp we reach and the duration it is a pretty efficient wood kiln.

I bought the whole album after watching this video and it is so great. You could make an album long video of firing a kiln set to it. Thanks for introducing us!

Not sure this kiln can be described as a down draft. or a cross draft. flame moves 6 feet up and 8 feet back. The air is pulled in not pushed, from the chimney so the air holes in the from of the kiln feed the first and second stoke with air. the air for the first enters under the wood grate over the coals through the wood, the second stoke air passes under the first set of shelves heating it and does the same as the first stoke. We use what ever wood we can get. right now hemlock cherry oak.
