James Steele Jr. is the Chairman of the Confederated Salish and Kootenay Tribes in Montana, USA. In this video he speaks to the traditional and cultural importance of protecting Waterton-Glacier World Heritage site to indigenous peoples. This address is prepared for the 33rd Annual Meeting of the World Heritage Committee in Spain. At this meeting the World Heritage Committee will consider a petition to list Waterton-Glacier as a World Heritage site "In Danger" due to a proposed coal strip mine in the headwaters of the Flathead River Valley.
Let's protect the transboundary Flathead River in its entirety-- for the water, wildlife and the cultural heritage of the Salish and Kootenay tribes! Thank you Chairman Steele for your leadership on this important issue!
