I remember that, i had a book called Flying into danger by Pattrick Foreman (i think thats what it was called) and the captain on that flight was called captain Moody, they were close to the hight of the mountains 12,000 ft before the engines started up again...?

Result of volcanic ash yes ash not electrical discharge through negative ions forming on metal surfaces as the plane flies. ST ELMO is a man that jerks off on planes with volcanic ash.
wrong you just probably watched that ACI thing on a 474 that this happened to St elmos fire happens when you get electrical discharge offend caused by flying through thunderstorms, yes it can be caused by volcanic ash but that is verry unlikly
um, you really don't need to be an ass. Before disregarding someone's comment, maybe you should look it up. St elmo's fire can come from volcanic ash after an eruption. Eruption clouds almost always create lightning, ball lightning and st elmo's fire.
A St. Elmos FIre may not be originated from Volcanic Ashes,
But in 1982, British Airways Flight BA-009 experienced similar phenomenon during their flight across Indonesia (where at that time, Mt. Galunggung in Central Java had just erupted and the massive amount of debris collided with the Airplane's surface, creating St. Elmos Fire)..
Please Watch ACI on British Airways, it was a 747-200

@GalactusNJ St. Elmos Fire isn't only seen
by ash-clouds, in thunder-clouds you've got
a chance of 1 on 10 to see it too.
