So I worked with the setup a lot last night and found some much more precise alignments for the setup which greatly increase the chance of grabbing the other side instead of falling. In fact I am getting across EVERY time I try it now. This has nearly a 100% success rate if you do the setup correctly.

The setup is the same as the original Runnerguy2489 setup aside from the angle alignments which are slightly different (and more precise).

Angle alignment pictures for this setup are on this page near the bottom:

Full instructions:

1. Walk against wall and Z-target.
2. Flick the control stick left(you should turn left a perfect 90 degrees).
3. Backwalk off the edge.
4. Climb up but but don't move anywhere(Link should automatically "scoot" to the right a tad).
5. Roll forward(do not push the control stick forward at all during the roll).
6. Pull out hookshot and point it on the wall (the hookshot's right-most point should be aligned with the right-most edge of the vertical black line when the hookshot is at it's "peak" of swaying to the right as shown in the video).
7. Sidehop to the right.
8. Pull out hookshot and align the B button's right edge with the right edge of the wooden pillar where it meets the hill in the background
9. Do the "turn-around" trick with the hookshot (push hookshot button then immediately flick the control stick backwards, almost at same time). DO NOT put the hookshot in your pocket for the turn around.
10. Find the red dot on the post, hook it at it's lowest visible point.
11. While being pulled across (and until you have physically grabbed the other side safely), hold Up-Right on the control stick and repeatedly mash Z until you grab. This angles you to the right and will help you grab the other side if you fall instead of grab.

Here is the angle-grabbing trick:

  • Does this work on VC 1.0 as well? I've only been able to do it on an actual 64.

  • @ElendilAndurilz

Yes it works on all versions. There's VERY few version-limited tricks in this game.

  • i do the exact same inital steps but when my hookshot is in the position yours is in (aiming for the sidehop) my sword on B is to the right of the black line that your sword is to the left of in the video i think the rolling distance may be different on diff versions i have no idea but i don't press anything when i roll

  • been doing this step for step and i can ever get it first try, and this is the weakest part of my speed run, i can do all the other one first try but this one annoys me, im doing it on vc v1.0, so it may be diff then console.

  • Link keeps falling down when I do the first sidehop! I've only tried it for an hour but it gets discouraging when all the others say they got it on their first couple of tries...

Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

  • Excellent, EXCELLENT instructions. I was dreading having to spend ages on this glitch (since failure means ending up at lake hylia), but thanks to your precise instructions, I got it on the fourth try! And the previous tries probably failed because I didn't notice your instruction saying not to put the hookshot away when doing the turnaround trick (I was falling off when turning around before I noticed this warning).

  • hmm I almost got it. when I did the sidehop he landed but the momentum made him just fall off.. thanks for this

  • I did it on the first strike ! Thank you !

  • fantastic, i've had more trouble with this than the DoT skip and water ess-ing out of the forest put together. the first time i tried it with these angles, i got across. thank you!

  • I'm Obama, and I approve this message!
