This exercise is from Linda Mecklenburg's Developing Jumping Skills book. The goals of this exercise are to help your dog develop a love of jumping, a desire to jump cleanly, to learn to look down when coming over the bar and to introduce collection cues.
Please note that the video was edited for time and Lola was rewarded for many repetitions at each jump height before I increased the height she was jumping.
Some pointers:
Start in a neutral position with the jump upright in line with your bellybutton and sit on your heels.
Keep the treats low, the goal is that your dog is looking down as he goes over the jump.
Click or use your marker word as your dog clears the jump. Don't click knocked bars. In the beginning, it is OK to click ticked bars. But, once your dog is really into the game, you can up the ante and only click clean jumps.
Jumping from a standstill is hard work. Keep your training sessions short.
Thanks for watching!
