Virgil was a High School teacher in Odessa, Tx. in the late '50s when he recruited 4 students to form the Velvets. Roy Orbison heard the demo and put them together with a recording studio in Nashville.
This was their only hit record as they did only limited touring. Virgil went on to become a Principal in the Lubbock, Tx. school system and is now retired from there. After retiring from the school system he did some DJ work for KDAV in Lubbock. KDAV has a webpage and streams their programming.

Such a cool song and very melodic. One of he best doo-wop songs.

Virgil Johnson although the oldest had a rather youthful voice.......very nice. I think I read where he was a teacher at a high school in Odessa & he formed the group with some of his students. They would have had more hits except they came along at the 'end of the doo woop era, I'd say. I'm sort of a historian of West Texas music, if anyone wants to write me about any other bands, groups or artists, please do!
