In the past the Republicans were the Northern liberals though and the Democrats were the Southern conservatives. Everyone who still supports the confederacy today is a Republican/conservative, while Lincoln was their biggest enemy. The parties have switched ideologies since the 19th century, and acting as if they were the same then as they are now is idiotic.

Reasons: high taxes, harshly cold winters, socialized medicine, gay marriage, love of hockey, TD Bank, air travel to and from Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Halifax. (Plus, Canada itself has five Boston TV stations on cable and home satellite.)
