The Drone Lab is a 4 voice analog drone synth, rhythm generator and FX processor. See http://www.ghostwizard.com/ for more information. Tweaking the oscillator pitches in realtime is a lot of fun.

The Vermona ER9 is an ultra rare analog rhythm device which is about the only rhythm machine produced in former East Germany. It was produced in 1976. The sounds are quite vintage and can be modified by internal trimpots. I managed to get a nice snare sound with a short decay.

This track was mixed with a Behringer Xenyx 1204USB and recorded and mastered on a Boss BR-600.

  • Interesting how the Drone Lab is capable of producing harmony, but nobody on any of these youtube videos seems quite aware of that possibility. Everyone thinks the four voices are just for "texture." But these are precise pitches! This is the first video that shows some of the harmonies that are possibly with this, albeit accidentally, since it's difficult and takes some measure of pitch memory in order to control the exact pitch with the knobs.

  • @Wh1tefox41 I dunno. Something that modulates the signal or has some capability beyond what you can get out of a basic PA mixer.

The truth is, the kid I built it for bought it to use as an effect processor and was disappointed. We heard the awesome sounds that came out of this thing in the demos and our initial reaction was, "I want my guitar to sound like that!"

  • @rottenapple02 Fair enough (: Then, what is the definition of an FX processor? Does it require more effects?

  • @Wh1tefox41 If I remember correctly from when I built if for a friend, the aux had no interaction with the oscillators; it was just mixed in before the filters and distortion. Again, a really nice drone but I wouldn't call two filters and a gain stage an effects processor.

  • @rottenapple02 Actually, I am pretty sure it can act as one, unless you didn't mean the same thing: It does have an auxiliary input which is driven via the Distortion, Filter (and i think the Tremolo too). (:

  • The drone lab is definitely a nice little 4 oscillator synth but it's not an effects processor.
