On December 8 2008, active and retired UAW members from across the U.S. traveled to Washington D.C. to put a human face on the real issues underlying the future of the domestic auto industry, manufacturing, and the American working family. The workers marched to the Rayburn House Office Building and held a press conference to voice their support for Single-Payer Bill H.R. 676, the critical role American manufacturing must play in any serious attempt to address climate change, and the urgent need for Congress to provide the industry aid to protect people, production, and the planet.

In this segment, former UAW Local 909 President, Chairperson, and International Representative Frank Hammer delivers his statement to the media.

  • Good job, getting the gov't to throw billions of taxpayer dollars at companies that were inevitably going to go bankrupt! However, he was correct that out-of-control medical costs are what sank the companies.

  • Global profits. Domestic bankruptcy. Which market is the free one? Yet again, the the powers that be reap all of globalization's benefits, and stick workers with all the blame.

  • AMERICANS you did a fine job telling how important it is to buy American products from food to autos from USA companys who make and have higher standards fairer wages for USA workers and must comply with laws of our nation and be held responsible when they dont. Unlike many other nations selling goods in our country. Its time for all of our states to support one another. And not be traitors to some foriegn country lining their pockets and to cause people in the USA to live worst off with less
