To me it sounds like he plays a D9 where you play a D7 but who cares..nice job.

Nice playing...I like the HDNight version in this....always wondered what the opening chord was....I've got a 91 160e ...used to belong to the guitar player in the tribute band American English who is now in Liverpool Legends.....little beat up but still .....the sound!....thanks for your posts .....they're great!

ahh...but didnt John always play D major with the F# on top???

No, he used to do that when using the D shape to play other chords, especially E, where he would fret XX6454, as in I´m Happy Just to Dance With You
But he played D major as it really is... you can see it on many live videos
