These men we see at the beginning of movie charging to their deaths are 13th Guards Rifle Division that sustained 30% casualties on its first day. They were the only reserves Russians had (10 000 men, Germans out numbered Russians almost 2 to 1) until Operation Uranus.
I suggest you to watch The Brest Fortress, a new Russian movie. Much better than this one.
