Baila was brought to Sri Lanka by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Wally Bastiansz adapted the 6/8 rythm into Sinhalese songs and created Sinhala Baila genre in the 1960s. Maxwell Mendis of Mendis Foursome group was a popular Baila singer in the 70s.
Mage Surahtal Podi Duwa is a song that a father sings about his little daughter, one of Maxwell's many popular Baila hits.

Dear Udeshi,
I am really sorry to hear about the loss of your father. On a positive note, be happy, he is in a better place than this cruel world. I am sure that he is looking down upon you from whereever he is.
Take care.

I grew up listening to my father who sang this song quite often in the past. Even as a little girl I had always realized this was a special kind of a song. This has been an inspiration to my upbringings. I remember memorizing each word of it and adopting it in to my life.
