Hello

I'm going to be buying a drum machine, and I was wondering what your opinion is of the spectralis

I've been considering buying an mpc or mv, but I don't feel like their as good of a live machine as most analog drum machines

How hard is it to make complex beats with this machine? Is it more of a synth than a drum machine?

I need a drum machine more than a synth.

What do you think?

If you like hitting pads, an MPC or newer box is a better choice. The Speckie's real power is in the synths that sound like nothing else. To control the Speckie you can hit the buttons and also you can use external pads and keyboards, there is a strength in drum machines.

Dear Paul, what do you think is better way to finish a sound, play together with the spectralis and record? or play every instrument individually and master all with a mixer or soft? Because im from old music school and I do the second way.

I start with recording a long improv to generate ideas then edit to keep the best parts. Then work on crafting and mixing each overdub part. That lets the emotion come through with the improv and the polish in the edits, OD and mix.

Got mine one year ago... not use it 2 much. Compared with DSI Prophet 08, some Clavias, Andromeda and good VSTi's, Spectralis sounds better and richer... remember: not analog osc's here.

For those who are ready to spend hours discovering the logic of this instrument, it's fine.

For those hoping to "play" with this machine 2 days after buying it, better go for Elektrons, Mpc's, Mc's. Otherwise frustration assured: boring and not logic compared to other boxes.

Don't go for one unless you're sure you want it and WHY you want it. If not

Hybrid synth = enormous, big, no filter bleed, it worths the price of the whole machine.

Digital synth = 6/10

@XYtoTheDoubleG If you haven't bought one, check out the Elektron Machinedrum, that is a cool machine. Otherwise you have the copy of the 909 from jomox, the Xbase 999, the later is analog which is always nice but the Machinedrum is really popular and have some other benefits over the xbase. It all depends on what you want, honestly I would like to have them both, but I have the machinedrum. What music do you want to make?

The Spectralis went into my digital mixer as did my mic. The audio was then fed into my camera. Thanks for your comment.

Suggestion: record your review with a mike, but the audio from the machine needs to be direct. The features you're describing are not enough to help make a decision about the Spectralis; direct sound examples are necessary (and would be appreciated).
