Enact the Consumer Financial Protection Agency

We need a Consumer Financial Protection Agency to elevate the importance of consumer protection, to take prompt action to prevent harm, and to end the ability of companies to shop for the most lax regulator.
It has become clear that the most calamitous worldwide recession since the Great Depression was in large part due to the simple failure of federal regulators to stop abusive lending, particularly unsustainable home mortgage lending. Such action would not only have protected many families from serious financial harm, but would likely have stopped or slowed the chain of events that has led to the current economic crisis.
