I scored my first movie last year, a 51-minute feature documentary about 19th century author--George MacDonald. I thought it might be fun for those of you aspiring to do film scores to get a peek at some of the techniques I used in the film, especially things pertaining to the use of acoustic guitar to produce very un-guitar-like sound effects.

This isn't going to tell you all you need to know in order to score a film, and it's not meant to. It's just a glance at the process. But hopefully you might get some inspiration for using acoustic guitar more in your own film projects.

Almost all of the music used in this movie is taken from the film - "The Mystical World of George MacDonald". You can watch the entire film here at YouTube. Look for it in my playlists. I did, however, use one tune from my CD - Pardon My Guitar. The track used was called - "Flamingo Joe" (a pun on 'flamenco' music). It can be purchased as an MP3 single at music retailors all over the web including Amazon, CDBaby, iTunes etc.

  • Well done man! @ things of love, guitar and spiritual things!

  • @GuitarLessonSarasota Thanks. I hope it's helpful to someone.

  • I like your work. is that Guitar Tracks 2.0? and an Ibanez SA guitar? same stuff I use. I see the Alesis Midiverb in your rig and a little mixer (analog?) what's the other rack stuff- a compressor, a tape deck. Nice, cost effctive way to go. PS i dig McDonald too.

  • @songbirdwhosings I used to use Guitar Tracks Pro for multi-track stuff and Adobe Audition for mostly just wave editing, but now that I've upgraded to Windows 7 on a 64-bit platform, I can no longer use GT Pro, so I'm just using Audition for everything. The mixer is just a little 12-track Behringer XENYX 1222FX. It's good enough for what I'm doing. There's two compressors. One is an inexpensive Behringer Stereo model. The other is a rather pricey old DBX 160XT mono unit that I love on acoustic.
