Brian Benvie Jr. will graduate from the police academy on Friday with six other Brockton police recruits. Two days later, he will fly to South Carolina and then ship out for a year on military duty, possibly in Afghanistan. But its not clear if the Army reservist will have a job when he returns. The careers of Benvie and six other Brockton police recruits remain uncertain as the city struggles with a $28 million deficit, mostly from state cuts, in the fiscal year that starts July 1. Hopefully, it will be settled by the time I get back, Benvie said. It is a scene being repeated throughout the state: veteran officers are getting laid off and new recruits are getting pink slips before even hitting the streets. It has never been like this in recent history, Mansfield Police Chief Arthur ONeill said. You have the specter of whole classes getting laid off. In other cities, Fall River laid off 53 police officers, New Bedford cut 31. Thirty-two Worcester police recruits were laid off the day they graduated from the academy. Arlington doesnt know what will happen with its three recruits set to graduate soon. There is an uncertainty, said Brian Geraghty, director of training at the Plymouth County sheriffs department. When they come out (of the academy), there is the question whether they will have a job, will they be laid-off later, what does Brockton police recruit trading in police uniform for Army one
