In this video I'm running the same test with my Swiss Ranger Volcano Stove except that I'll be using Sterno instead of the fuel can in the Swiss M1 stove (the Notkocher M71).
The video using the Notkocher M1 "Swiss Ranger Volcano Stove using the Swiss M1" is found at the following address:

Sounds like sterno would be a good choice for LONG term simmers, such as cooking a big batch of navy beans or 16 bean soup ... I wonder what temperature would be best, for simmering beans ... hmmm. Clean-up would be a pain, but a full batch of beans would last a weekend.

hey, forget using the sterno inside of its can. get a spoon and scoop some of the gloop onto a popcan half (either way works, inside the can or flipped over and glooped onto the bottom) i can get a 5 minute boil on the cup and 7 minutes on the bottle. also when the sterno is scooped out it burns FOREVER and can be blown out and re used for a couple of hours.

will a full sized sterno fit in there

Your cup is to far away from the sterno. i made my own sterno stove by putting a empty sterno can on top of a full one, after cutting a hole in the bottom of the empty one and putting holes around the side i boild 2 cups of water in half your time. Plus it;s a perfect fit and i mean perfect.

Great test Hiram, I wonder how the one match gel would work in a small container? Or have you done that test already and I missed it? I was thinking of a supercat design alcohol stove using a red bull or similar can, and filling it with the alcohol gel...I know it burns hotter thant he sterno, I keep a small container of it in my work truck for using as a hand warmer when I am up in the air working...lol

yes, that was one of the intended uses when it was made. to use fuel tabs, and wood.

would that stove be able to be used as a wood stove ?
thanks

How about using the Notkocher cooking ring to see if boil time can be reduced? If it can direct air down to the fuel surface, the flame should be maintained closer to the surface so increasing vaporisation and a bigger flame overall. Previously better results were had with the bottle than the cup IIRC.
