The Doro Sextet performs the 2nd Movement of the String Sextet in Eb by Frank Bridge (1879-1941). Before you ask, a few bars in the Allegro Giusto passage were edited out for the sake of fitting the YouTube time limit. This recording was made on 26/07/2008 at the Orlando Chamber Music Festival in Kerkrade (the Netherlands). The performers are Ying Wei Nio and Liesbeth Praat (violins), Jeroen Terstegge and Kristofer G. Skaug (violas), Hylke van Lingen and Anna Offermans (celli), amateurs originally acquainted through the student orchestra Krashna Musika in Delft. Liesbeth is substituting for our regular 2nd violinist in this program.

  • Well done! The Bridge Sextet is a fantastic piece, and you really did the movement justice. The cyclic references to the first movement's second subject were very clear, the tempo in the central scherzo section was very effective, and you had nicely dramatic dynamics. The mood of lament was caught perfectly. Bravo!

Next time you're looking for material I suggest you examine the sextets of Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Egon Kornauth.

  • Thank-you for the kind words! Currently we're working on Gliere's sextet no.3, but the Korngold sextet is on our list of future prospects. Kornauth's sextet is unknown to me, but sounds intriguing. My Googling efforts so far are fruitless, however. Do you know where (CD, sheet music) this piece could be found, for further study? Where/how did you learn of it?

  • I'm truly astounded that you guys can play like this. You really look passionate about this piece ,but at the same time willing to let yourself have fun. Bravo! I'm really looking forward to what you'll play next.

  • Thanks sciz, it's nice to hear that! Our projects tend to stretch out over time, both because we enjoy the voyage, and because the majority of string sextet literature isn't exactly written for amateurs. But we'll keep trying! :-)
