Since James first fell in love with Lily in school, and since they were both in the Order together, it makes perfect sense. There was a war on, nobody knew what would happen, Voldemort was getting stronger all the time. It would be only natural that they would want to marry and start a family while they still could. even in the real world, people tend to marry young in times of great danger or war.

@shinofand2 They didn't die on Harry's first birthday, he was one when it happened yeah, but the dies on Halloween Night, says so in the first book and movie. Then in the seventh book.
