A quick taster of the Homecut's debut album "No Freedom Without Sacrifice" (available on First Word Records www.firstwordrecords.com).
The launch event at the Vibe Bar was packed (despite a tube strike making travel difficult). Dedicated listeners travelled from across the UK to support the launch.
Homecut is a mix of styles and not easy to pigeon -holed. The album contains live instrumentation and no samples. The high level of musicianship is a great listen and bursts a blend of Ghanian beats, laid back jazz , sweet vocals, lyrically smooth emcee-ing and lots more.
Concious lyrics make this a deep collection of tunes with lots to think about. A range of issues are raised, but not in a heavy or preachy way. I've not been able to stop listening. It's definately an album which is very listenable and can be played again and again - with the listener gaining something each time.
It's available on itunes and features, among others, Corinne Bailey-Rae andSoweto Kinch.
