This is a clip from John Ford's documentary THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY (1942), showing the famed director himself at the scene of the great battle. He was 48 years old at the time and serving as a Lieutenant Commander in the OSS branch of the Navy. In 1944 he would be promoted to Captain, and still later to Rear Admiral. During the Battle of Midway Ford was almost killed by a Japanese bomb, wounded by shrapnel, and received a Purple Heart and the Legion of Merit. His film THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY, shot on location with the battle raging around him, won an Academy Award.
