That clears it up. I believe basically the same thing as you; that morality might be at least partially genetic.
Twin studies are a wonderful tool for science in addressing these types of questions. For example, they have shown (via IQ testing) that intelligence is 40-60% heritable. The rest is determined by environment.
I'm definitely open to the possibility (I think it's probable) that heredity can affect one's sense of morality, but I'm just not sure if this is a testable theory.

I can see your point about the potential benefits of religion, but like the above poster said, atheism is just a personal choice. There is no proselytizing and it's not a "movement" or even an ideology. Atheism is actually the LACK of an ideology.
I guess some people need religion to help guide them and to help them to gain a sense of right/ wrong and conscience. However, it's very difficult to measure or estimate the extent to which religion influences a person's sense of conscience.

Couldn't have said it better myself....I am an atheist or possibly an "agnostic." I was brought up Catholic and went to Catholic schools. The further away I distanced myself from religion, the more thought I put into ethics and morality. That was just my path though. I'm not implying that everyone has the same experience. Clearly, there are plenty of religious people with good morals.
As an atheist, I see myself as the only entity responsible for my actions. This makes me feel more accountable.

There is no 'message', atheism is not a movement. Just because people don't share your particular set of arbitrary ethics doesn't mean we get to go beating up strangers.
Besides, if what you're saying is true, why does atheism tend to be associated with better educated, less criminal people?

It's not just God's commandments why we do good I believe the same as atheists it's because we need each other and that's the way I believe God constructed nature so that it's better for us to work together instead of against.
But what I find dangerous about the message of atheism is that there are people out there that are capable of getting away with doing some naughty things to others so they think "He's just a stranger to me I might as well con him we only live once who cares" and behold.

With me I have a really annoying habit of picking my fingers. In my mind I know it's a stupid habit but because of my nature I find it hard to stop. See what I mean nature it's passed down and I believe our deeds are too.
So it's possible that people were inspired by Jesus' teachings and followed them like "Love thy neighbour as thy self" lived by them and passed that kind of nature to their children. After a while generations become less religious but those deeds live on. (continued)

Not solely due to genes but it can play a major part sometimes it depends. We are who we are due to our genetic make up as processed information from our DNA, we then act on that information. People can't choose their nature whether it's bad or good but it's possible to change if it needs to be done. We do have choices to make but it's mostly our nature that makes the choices. A bad person can change too but it's very tough but it can be done.

Hold on, am I misinterpreting what I'm reading here? Are you saying that a person who does good deeds does so exclusively due to his/her genetic makeup?
-
Naw they just get caught saying something stupid and then everyone's like.... OMG!!!!

To me they're simply Christians who reject heaven and make this world their heaven that's what I think personally.
A lot of them don't really follow what Jesus says and just does whatever they like. So they may as well be atheists and atheists may as well be Christians because some of them do better jobs.
That's when I believe that's all down to good GENES. I believe deeds get passed down definitely.

Comments disabled over there - guess he didn't enjoy people thinking with their brains enough to protest such barbaric, malevolent approach to something that would better lead us to peace and freedom - freedom being the American Magic Word, "We can't let the terrorists attack your freedoms before we do!"
Hopefully Obama will help scrape off that ignorant hick mask from the USA's reputation ...
