I bought a Game Gear today and, surprise surprise, the capacitors are bad! I opened it, and had some trouble identifying the capacitors.

I only count 10, I'm supposed to have 12 for my motherboard, but there are two things that look like they should be capacitors, but don't look like the other ones. Are they capacitors, or do I really only have 10?

  • You should have 12 total for the main board.

Those 3 beige things are capacitors on the left side, there are also 3 more beige and the right side of it. They are labeled on the board, from the top down C55, C54, and C4, C4 is a 10v 68uF

    C55 and C54 are 50v .47uF

    Those 2 have R4 50

    # (or something like that, I think they messed up printing on them.

  • my C4 cap says 16v, 1.0 uF

  • make that 10, not 1.0

  • What do the 3 on the right side have on them, they look the same on mine. It's a blue, single chip one, I also have some 2 chip black ones, but they are different.

Also this blue one I have has a bad contrast and very low sound, so I am going to recap it soon, I already have all he capacitors to fix them because I fixed 3 not to long ago.

I will find out more about the single chips capacitors and post it here.

  • The three on the right are all 10 micro farads, 16v. The farads number is right, I don't think a higher voltage makes a difference, but I'll replace them with 16v ones since that's what's in there now.

  • that's why i never buy things like that unless if i test it myself

  • yeah sometimes it's frustrating, but I always like fixing things to get a nice working system when it was assumed "broken"

  • help help my game gear faz bummmm

  • My game gear is just like yours except not blue, I replaced all of mine today and used 0.47 micro farad capacitors for the 2 beige ones. Its works great!! I am very

pleased:-) the voltage does not matter as long as it is higher and not lower than the originals, thats the blowing point of the capacitor. Although they may be larger and more difficult to fit around things. Hope this helps.

  • man my game gear turns on then off real fast does that mean bad caps? sometimes it stays lit but when i put a game in it shuts off, also were can i buy the new caps?

  • Good luck on the fix! More power to you, man. Seriously ... I'd never even try to attempt a solution! LOL! I mess things up!

  • could you do a video of the fix attempt?

  • 2-Bit Gaming - 022 - Sega Game Gear Repair (LCD Screen Fix)

This guy has a PDF in the side bar, and hea has another video about sound problems, you will have to replace those also unless you don't want to mess with it now.

I would since you already have it open and it doesn't take much time.

  • 10uF 16v is right on C4, and you are right the voltage just has to be higher then what you are replacing.
