My group makes pretty much all of our maps on paper, all you need is a grid that you can draw any appropriate scenery or landmarks on. It's cool to use nice 3D maps like this one but you don't have to.

Yeah, you need a grid map especially for when there is battle. The DM has a map on grid paper that only the DM can see. The DM uses it as a reference to draw on the table grid map (made out of some sort of non porous surface) with a wet erase marker to show the players areas such as rooms,corridors etc..All areas, attacks, movement, spells have a radius.So, in order for you to play ( especially battle accurately) you need 2 maps. I had a roll up map made of sort of vinyl that worked great. GL :)

It's a tabletop game you can just use normal graph paper maps and character sheets with dice. Or you can use virtual tabletop services like roll20dotnet,
