  • The bravest post war RN pilots were those who flex the Scimitar , in 8 years service half the 75 built were lost in crashes. True coffin makers. If they had actually had to fight of Ark, Hermes and Centaur at the time of the Cuban missile crisis, they would have been terryifying to launch. Whether a limited tactical nuclear war was ever really thought possible by RN in the early l960s is difficult to know. The concept was 5 kiloton red beards against airbases and November subs.

  • There was a sort of absurdity about completing the Hermes and the reconstruction of Victorious, 14 years after WW2 because with the limited air capacity of their design they were too small for useful number of aircrafts or the Scimitar or Vixen which were heavy. The Scimitar if awesome in appearnce and power, was never properly or safely developed and should never have entered production.
