Hi, I'm Delegate Kirill Reznik. The 2012 Maryland General Assembly's 90 day legislative session began this past Wednesday, and that means that it's time for the return of my weekly video blog updating you on what is going on here in Annapolis as the session progresses.

It's the beginning of the 430th legislative session and we plan on tackling many important issues these coming months. Unlike the U.S. Congress, in Maryland the General Assembly must pass a balanced budget every year. We will work to pass that budget making sure to balance our priorities as a progressive and forward-thinking State while being mindful of budget limitations and projected deficits. Along with the budget, we will looking at the best ways to fund our ever pressing transportation infrastructure needs, implementing national health care reform at the state level, bringing offshore wind power to Maryland, bringing marriage equality to all Marylanders, and many other issues.

I will also have my own legislative agenda I will be focused on this session. I plan on introducing around 10 bills this session. That includes once again taking up the fight to pass a mandate on health insurance to provide assistance to the families of children with autism. Other highlights of my agenda include looking to introduce legislation to keep electronics waste out of our landfills, helping protect dogs from bad owners, keeping children out of our casinos, and providing some additional options for small business owners to improve their outlook to improve revenue and provide additional opportunities for employment. As the session progresses, I will give more details about the bills I will be sponsoring as they are introduced.

Finally, once again I am very proud to announce that that despite our tough fiscal situation, our public schools are, for the fourth straight year, ranked #1 in the country. Education policies and funding will be one of our top priorities again, and we will continue to make tough decisions to ensure our children can get the best education in the country.

As the session progresses I will talk about all of these issues and many more in greater detail so please keep tuning in. I also want to hear your ideas for how we can make our community better. Please contact me if there is anything I can help you with, whether it's a state, county, or neighborhood issue. I look forward to updating you every week during the session. See you next week!
