The flywheel of the 'Prince Consort' Engine.
Crossness has flywheels on its engines, unlike older beam engines, the flywheels provide momentum and also place a limit on the travel of the pistons (older engines are at risk of blowing the top off the cylinder if not carefully controlled!). The Pumps here were directly operated from the beams, and there was a main beam and a rather reclusive counter beam that's very difficult to see.
