This is me explaining and demonstrating what commentary is, how to develop it, and showing you what full commentary looks like. There are 4 parts to it.

  • great driving, what does that extra mirror show?, im sure ive seen it on a police car before.

  • Thanks. The mirror is nothing special - I was trying to show the camera what I could see in my mirror. However, the second mirror did not work very well for this purpose, partially because YouTube videos' resolution is not really good enough for even the forward view, never mind what is in the mirror!

  • Just out of interest when would you need to use a commentary like this?

  • Well, it used to be compulsory on the advanced driving tests administered by IAM and Rospa. It is no longer compulsory, but still is a plus point if you do it well.

Also it is a good thing to be able to do when doing demonstration drives for people you are helping with their driving - it shows them what you are looking at and thinking about. Some people find it a useful thing to do even on their own sometimes to improve concentration and focus, but I've found this to be only true up to a point

  • A good series of video`s and I am in no doubt that they contributed in no small measure to my passing of the Advanced Driving Test today.

    Well done.

  • Just curious! You are very good at the commentary stuff, but you are not an instructor or training to be one. Why did you use your valuable time to do these videos? Glad you did though...good commentary is conducive to good driving! Many thanks

  • As an IAM member and response driver , I like your phrases and calm manner , I think that new drivers should be taught this and hazard perception as standard. Thank you for taking the time and being enlightening

  • Brilliant. I am just about to take my IAM bike training so found your videos very helpful. I will be using some of your abbreviations and wording, they work great. Many thanks, keep the videos coming.
