This video highlights the environmental health hazard being encountered on farms in North Devon where European Starlings over winter.
In the winter of 2009 there was an outbreak of "starling flu" in all dairy farms in this area, cows were sick, listless, scouring and milk production in many cases was 50% down for a week to 10days depending on the seriousness and reaction in the cows.
I have also heard of a few isolated cases where this "flu" was caught by farm workers/ farmers exposed to the extreme faecal contamination in feed troughs and passageways whilst carrying out farm tasks.
With all the tight regulation that governs feed stuffs and food production, it is an oddity that this kind of environmental health hazard is continuously overlooked and controls not put in place to allow producers to control this problem.
They are not protected in the u.s. So I can kill them. Their a invasive pest.
