A scalp massage is not a scalp massage without the help of essential oils. Essential oils are lightweight, volatile oils with high capabilities for scalp and skin penetration because of their unique molecular structure and size. Many essential oils have scalp stimulation properties that will enhance the results of your regular scalp massages. Peppermint oil, rosemary oil and nettle are chief among these. One product in particular, Organic Root Stimulator (ORS) Fertilizing Serum ($12 for 2 fl. oz) is great for facilitating the massage process because it contains these stimulating essential oils. It is also mentholated to effectively invigorate your scalp. This product is excellent for those who are experiencing thinning in certain areas of the scalp, and it contains many scalp soothing ingredients including: horsetail extract, aloe vera gel, glycerin, and garlic extract.
Perhaps the best thing about the ORS serum is that it is also water-based product that does not contain any potentially scalp clogging ingredients to defeat the purpose of your massage. ORS fertilizing serum is not a growth product per se, however, what it will do is increase circulation to problem areas of the scalp by causing the scalp to warm and tingle just a bit. This tingling draws blood to the area, and that increased blood flow will help nourish any undernourished follicles. Because it is a scalp stimulant, you should discontinue its use a week before and after a relaxer chemical service.
You should massage this product in the problem areas for 5-10 minutes, and make sure that you are not rubbing the hair around in your massage. You should be gently placing the pads of your fingers on the scalp skin and manipulating, squeezing, or kneading the skin itself without disturbing the orientation of the hair.
Thinning edges are caused by slow growth, scalp infection or an excessive amount of tension/stress applied to a specific area over a long period of time. To help the hair grow back, the hair follicles need to be rejuvenated to improve blood circulation and promote more hair growth. I've noticed that products containing anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties, help combat dandruff and bacteria off of the scalp. The removal of dandruff/bacteria unclogs the hair follicles allowing the scalp to breathe resulting in faster hair growth since nothing is inhibiting the growth.
a) Rosemary Oil - Needs to be mixed with a carrier oil (too potent otherwise). Known to increase blood flow, therefore, promoting hair growth.
b) Peppermint Oil - Needs to be mixed with a carrier oil (too potent otherwise). Gives a cooling effect/tingle to the scalp, and removes dandruff. Purifies the scalp. Known to increase blood flow, therefore, promoting hair growth.
c) Castor Oil - Cleanses toxins & impurities from the scalp, nourishes and thickens the hair. Stimulates hair growth while moisturizing dry brittle hair.
