Back in the early 1970's I went to a Conway Twitty concert and somebody else that didn't show up, in Ocean City Maryland. Conway was really good and the replacement band that played, was absolutely stupendious.

It was Roy Orbinson. His voice never faultered or deviated from the records we listened to, and his range is almost unhuman. To say he was great is soft peddling his singing abilities. These videos that you are watching and listening to suck, as compared to the real deal. He was an American treasure and still is, inside of those of us that had the good fortune to have been able to hear him live.

What's tom waits doing there? Is he playing on the piano?

I knew nothing about Roy Orbison other than that he was a great singer, but if, like me until just now, any of you don't know anything to speak of, about him, I recommend that you read Roy's Wikipedia entry.
It mentions this performance and explains so much about the special atmosphere. I believe what makes it so, is that all the positive emotions it conveys are based on a deep reverence, in a certain sense, even awe for the man himself, apart from his special gifts as a singer and songwriter.

They didn't look like they were performing. They looked like they were enjoying themselves fit to bust.

What America is capable of.. or was. Sublime. Great singer, great song, great arrangement and staged in a quirkily humorous way. The mix of the backing group.. everything was perfect.

I would have given my house , car , wife and kids , { no beer } to have had a table for this terrific gig . An Aussie .

@tattoofu roys other live versions are more "authentic" closer to the original record but this black and white night show is good I even know a guy that likes opera and doesnt like rock that like this he watched it on tv you know there was a live tv show in the early 70s with roy and danny and the juniors called at the hop
With all due respect - and I do respect him - shut up, Bruce. Roy doesn't need your help.

Who cares who is in the ensemble. Geez, I'm tired of idiots having stupid arguments over a song. Grow up!
