@windycloud23 Special VFR is perfectly safe and legal, so are class G vfr mins.

@macsm Pilot and airplane are IFR rated, the area is a non radar environment and most of the approach mins are higher than what you can get in under special VFR (1sm Clear Of Clouds) so this is how its done in Alaska, IFR you'd be going missed constantly. Also, your not gonna pick up Ice when its above freezing like that, icing is the worst in the -2 to 1 degree Celcius range, then again Ive picked up Ice all the way down to -6 C in some situations, but its rare.

@TheWhiteOwl23 They have GPS, and know the terrain, besides that, if you looked at the video it was good vfr, not so much "fog terror" but makes for good drama.
