  • this is nathaniel lerma from dallas tx i think there is a lot play on the timeing chain

  • @wclerma Thanks Nathaniel. I ended up changing it since I already had it tore down.

  • Where is the timing chain tensioner??!

  • @srpope80 There is no tensioner on the V6. It's only on the 4 cylinder Jeeps. This is a straight 6.

  • @ejayerik Did you have any noise from that chain? I have a lot of slack in my chain as well and my engine is making a ticking noise that I'm pretty sure is the cause.

  • @srpope80 I didn't have any noise since I got the engine from the junk yard. I was striping it down and changing out anything that looked worn. It's pretty cheap to do and not that hard even when the engine is still in the bay. If you have this amount of slack or worse, than I'd say replace it. Just remember to center it top dead when you change it out. See if you can borrow a timing gun too.

  • Changed my timing chain on my 5.9 V8 on my Jeep when the timing cover gasket started to leak.. It had about 123k miles at the time had about the same amount of slack. Not much but i replaced it anyway.

Not too sure how much slack out 98 Laredo with the 4.0 has tho.. Its got closing 180k miles on it with the original chain. But it doesnt make any odd noises in the front, and it doesnt leak coolant or anything so dont fix what isnt broken.

  • yes. i lined the dots up which had the crank knotch up to 12;00 position with the chain on. then i turned the camshaft to 180 deg with chain off. i took distributor out and lined it up to the #1 point on the distributor cap (took a few tries being i had to line the tip of distributor with the oil pump). i eventually got it and bammmm! it started right up. so my points where::::: camshaft at 11;00 and the crank at 11:oo.. I had originally put the cam at 5 and crank at 11 which was wrong.

  • @myfagan Did you get it figured out? Let me know if you didnt. I just did a head, new cam, lifters, timing chain and gears, water pump, etc..on my 98 zj.
