In 2008, Sean Marckos, the President of Dreamsgate Pictures, was denied entrance to the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival because he is a wheelchair-user, which he has been in since birth due to muscular dystrophy. This incident was a blatant act of discrimination that refused Sean the same rights as his peers.
For the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, Sean sent a letter to the festival organizers, via a lawyer, requesting that they install a ramp on the red carpet to permit universal access. His request was quickly and rudely denied.
We find the festival's treatment of Sean as a second-class citizen to be unacceptable, and are refusing to remain complacent about the matter. We are currently in production for Just Imagine, a documentary that follows Sean as he battles for equality at the festival. A portion of the proceeds from the film will be donated to disability associations worldwide, as well as to the Dreamsgate Children's Foundation.
Just Imagine uses the incident at Cannes as a platform for the question of how mass media manipulates image in order to create perceived inequalities among people, which in turn creates discrimination and human rights violations. The documentary currently includes interviews with industry professionals, as well as exclusive footage of stars such as Brad Pitt, Verne Troyer, Mads Mikkelsen, Diane Kruger, and Quentin Tarantino.
