live from Bangkok on the day of Thailand's first general election since deadly street riots crippled the capital.
reports from the campaign trail, interviewing Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and the new face of the opposition in Thai politics, Yingluck Shinawatra.
But there's controversy over whether she's merely a mouthpiece for her brother, controversial ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
So is the country on the brink of new political upheaval and more violence on the streets between her red shirt supporters and the anti-Thaksin yellow shirts?
The sister of exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra led Thailand's main opposition party to a landslide victory in elections Sunday, heralding an extraordinary political turnaround five tumultuous years after her fugitive billionaire brother was toppled in an army coup.
The vote paves the way for 44-year-old Yingluck Shinawatra, who has never held office, to become this Southeast Asian kingdom's first female prime minister.
A large mandate to govern could help the new government navigate a way out of the crisis that has plagued Thailand since Thaksin's 2006 overthrow. But the question remains whether the nation's elite power brokers, including the monarchy and the army, would accept the result.
Thaksin was barred from politics in 2007 and convicted on graft charges the next year. The U.S.-educated Yingluck, who he has called "my clone," is widely considered his proxy.
The incumbent premier, Abhisit Vejjajiva, conceded defeat Sunday night and said he was ready to become the opposition.

  • It's embarrassing to her as PM!!!!! Get out!!!!!

  • We should be proud of the PM for being the first female PM of the country. Granting that she does not know much about running the country. It only took her 49 days to come into power. This is a big historic day of the country that male have dominated. Maybe her mother instinct will lead Thailand to a gender and kinder country. This also should teach our next generation that money talk. If she were to be a poor single mom, this would have happen.

  • Has Thailand move forward under Ahbisit? NO

Is Thailand less corrupt under Ahbisit gov? NO, in fact it's more according to corrupt ranking.

Is Ahbisit more capable problem solver than Thaksin? No, everyone knows.

Although Ahbisit is a more polite witty talker and handle his cool better, HE ACCOMPLISH NOTHING as a PM. This is a fact. Still those thais vote for him? Why? Because he's good looking and talk good, just like how our entertainment industry goes, look is priority, not skill. LMAO
