Matsuri Taiko, or Festival Drum, draws its main rhythm from a traditional pack-driver's folksong called Kage Bushi, often sung at festivals in Japan. This adaptation of the piece stresses big, open movements with an exaggerated style amongst multiple improvised solos.
Seiichi Tanaka of San Francisco Taiko Dojo, considered by many to be the "father" of taiko in America, wrote the main body of the song, and through his influence, it has become one of the most widely played pieces in North American taiko. In honor of the concert theme, CONVERGENCE, we've invited our guest artists to take part in our matsuri.
