Again?! Well, not exactly. You'll see. It's worth noting that the ground covered is familiar, but the block numbers are still increasing...which would explain why the screen is now more than happy to keep up with you if you should accidentally lose your footing on the way down.

Anyway, where are my manners? It seems that our good friend the "Fleaman" is actually a human being! I wonder how Dracula manages to do that to a guy...or rather, I wonder even more how one manages to turn back, since I don't see any difference in what Trevor did here to how he solves all his problems...with a whip to the face, of course. Maybe it hadn't been very long and Trevor just happened to come along in time to do our new friend a favor instead of killing him like anything else.

This is Grant Danasty...also sometimes in older Romanizations called "DeNasty" or "Dynasty"...depending on your particular preference...or the context in which he's brought up, whatever. The name "Danasty" seems to be Konami's preference anyway, not that it really comes up a lot. Grant is otherwise pretty much a footnote in the history of the series, although I kinda like the little guy all the same.

I believe the English localization team decided that he looked something like a pirate in-game, so they wrote a sort of backstory (somewhere? I don't know exactly where...maybe it's all there in the manual or something) of him being a pirate of sorts...I don't know how much (if any) of that has anything to do with Grant, but I guess it's no worse than "he's a guy from Wallachia who happens to be a good jumper."

Actually, that brings me to a rather significant detail about Grant...he's got all the abilities demonstrated in that boss fight! He can use knives and axes, walks faster, jumps higher, ducks lower (an interesting tidbit that comes into play every now and again), and most strikingly, he can climb walls and ceilings!

It's kinda tricky, but basically he'll stay attached to a surface if you continue to hold the control pad direction towards the surface you want him to cling to. If you hold the direction and either of the two adjacent directions, he will crawl along the surface. And if he hits a corner, he moves from one surface to the other! The transition can be a little touchy, since you've got to press against the wall until you're completely on the other surface, then you've got to hold the direction input towards that wall instead, sometimes creating a bit of a challenge to make sure you don't let him get unstuck from a particularly precarious position. How do you suppose he sticks to all these surfaces, though?

Still, the ability is more than useful enough, making him a fun alternative to slogging around as clunky ol' Trevor, wading through enemies and trying not to mess up on the little two-block gaps that he just barely clears every so often.

There are some drawbacks, though. Grant uses a tiny little dagger, so his range is nothing like Trevor's...and he only deals damage equivalent to Trevor's unimproved whip. He also takes a bit more damage from enemies, but I guess that comes with the territory of not being some kind of seasoned warrior who lives to fight evil.

You may also notice that I encounter something that would be downright unheard of in the original Castlevania...a "1UP" pickup, which is actually quite indicative of the fact that there are free extra lives hiding all over the place in this game...assuming you can reach them. Which makes it somewhat unfairly biased in Grant's favor if there are so many out there that Trevor quite simply cannot reach.

Oh well, the tower collapsed. Grant and Trevor had time to hold a conversation before it did so, though...if they had talked while they ran across the bridge, do you suppose they could have actually succeeded in making the "direct route" in spite of Dracula's shoddy construction? Oh well, seems like it's going to be the scenic route for Trevor and his new pal, too bad.

I guess he's not nearly genre-savvy enough to know that being as this is a video game, it can't be over TOO quickly, or else it can't possibly live up to the standards of its predecessors and competition. Uh...I mean, what? ...yes, this is 15th century Europe...what is this...vid-ee-oh game? Is that what the kids are all talking about these days? They should practice sharpening their wooden stakes instead, in case the vampires should come.

  • So the earthquake was so violent, even Trevor's map shakes?

The way Grant fell through the stairs, I thought he wasn't able to climb them and that he needed to scale the walls and ceilings instead. It sure looks harder to use Grant than Trevor.

  • It's always been the case that stairs can't be landed on, only ascended or descended beginning from where they start and dismounted from either end.

Trevor would also fall through, but it would be a bad idea for him to get too crazy trying to abuse the privilege, since he can't control his jumps after he leaves the ground like Grant can.

Grant is tricky to use, but his abilities are more than rewarding enough to justify bringing him along for stages...not so much for fighting, though.

  • How's Grant in Castlevania Judgment? Do his abilities reflect how he's like in this game?

It seems like Grant's great for blazing through a stage and skipping enemies and all that but is bad on the combat side of things. I mean...that range is pathetic. It's worse than Link's in the original Legend of Zelda.

  • Actually, he's apparently changed drastically from the Japanese version of the game. In his original form, his regular attack was actually identical to the Dagger subweapon, except it didn't cost him any hearts, but on the flip side, he couldn't apply the double and triple shot powerups to it, so he could only fire one at a time.

In Judgment, he's extremely fast and something of a projectile fanatic, with ranged attacks that emulate the Dagger and Axe subweapons. It's...interesting, all right.
