1981 - 1982 airchecks of 77 WABC received from Philadelphia. Art Rust, Jr., Johnny Donovan and Dan Ingram. News announcer Rick James and reporter Kathleen Maloney. The first segment sounds like Howard Hoffman. The "ear splitting roar" skit with the WABC jingle is actually a real-time in-tape edit that I made on the cassette when I heard it. I don't remember what the skit was leading up to. The news broadcast toward the end of this aircheck compilation is from March 25, 1982 and includes reporter Kathleen Maloney. I remember listening to a three hour or so special on WABC a few nights after Lennon was shot. It was hosted by Kathleen Maloney. It ended up boosting her radio career. I had the whole program taped but, alas, discarded it. If anyone has this, please contact me.

  • I actually remember Ms. Maloney at WABC as far back as the mid-1970's, alongside such names as Bob Hardt, John Meagher, Bob Capers, and Rick James (not to be confused with the funk "Super Freak" of the same name); all of them did news updates at :25 and :55. For a top music station, WABC did win several news awards, from what I recall.

  • @wmbrown6, Rick James has a very easy-going and easy to listen-to style of delivering the news. Much easier to listen to than the normal nervous rapid-fire delivery that often leads to the listener not catching the story.

  • I could swear the first routine heard at the start was by Howard Hoffman . . .

  • @wmbrown6, that does sound like Howard Hoffman. The "ear splitting roar" skit with the WABC jingle is actually a real-time in-tape edit that I made on the cassette when I heard it. I don't remember what the skit was leading up to. But the edit sounds cool. I remember listening to a 3 hour or so special on WABC a few nights after Lennon was shot. It was hosted by Kathleen Maloney of their news. It ended up boosting her radio career. I had the whole program taped but, alas, discarded it. :(

  • I was a regular caller of the Art Rust, Jr. Show. I was "Brian from Bayside". I was hoping to hear me in that clip, but it was interesting in any event. Thanks for posting that.

  • WABC Web Page says Johnny Donovan Started at WOR-FM in New York in 1968 before moving to WABC in 1972, Johnny did fill in work.-This is all true but before 1968,Johnny was "Large Sarge" at an Am Station in Hyde Park NY-Channell 95 WHVW Hyde Park! He also went by his real name rather than "Johnny Donovan" his Radio Name!-Out of respect to his privacy , I will stop at this point-

  • Art Rust Jr. the Godfather of sports talk

  • @TechnerVideo - I'd have to concur about Mr. James, in fact I'd've rated him among my favorite of the news update anchors at 77 WABC. (Although by 1983, Mr. Meagher went to 1010 WINS as one of their anchors, and today Ms. Maloney is one of their reporters.)
