Three Portuguese water dogs swim, bark, run around and retrieve a ball in the chilly and choppy waters of the Atlantic off Cadiz, Spain. In case you're not up to speed, this dog is on a short list of two, for White House pet. We didn't know what they were when we saw these enthusiastic swimmers apparently heading out to sea. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about them:
Portuguese Water Dogs (PWD) are a breed of water dog similar to poodles. Portuguese Water Dogs once existed all along Portugal's coast, where they were taught to herd fish into fishermen's nets, to retrieve lost tackle or broken nets, and to act as couriers from ship to ship, or ship to shore. Portuguese Water Dogs rode in bobbing fishing trawlers as they worked their way from the warm Atlantic waters of Portugal to the frigid fishing waters off the coast of Iceland where the fleets caught saltwater codfish to bring home.

  • Aha. You are the first one to have mentioned this. I am not an expert and assumed that since we were near Portugal, that was what we had. (Identified by a friend who had seen them on TV in connection with the Obama story.) I will leave the current title intact, since they are probably near enough for anyone interested in PWDs. I had no idea WHAT they were when I shot the video. they are a great advert for themselves.

  • These dogs are certainly Waterdogs enjoying a swim. They are Spanish Waterdogs however, perros d`agua Espanhol. Portuguese Waterdogs are larger, generally, less stocky and tails are undocked.

    Viva the Iberian Waterdog!!!!!!

  • Yup, Spanish Water Dogs. Lovely video!

  • ce ne sont pas des chiens d'eau portugais mais des chiens d'eau espagnol....

  • Lovely dogs - but they are most likely Spanish Water Dogs and not Portuguese - similar but the PWDs have long tails with plumes on the end and these three are either docked or natural bobtails

  • AWSOME DOGS.
