California prisons on hunger strike

For the last week, inmates in several California prisons have been taking part in a hunger strike. They've been refusing state-issued meals to show solidarity with those at the Pelican Bay state prison in Northern California. Inmates are protesting against what they call inhumane conditions. More than 6,000 inmates have been involved so far, making it the largest California prison hunger strike in more than ten years. A member of the US Revolutionary Communist party and former prisoner Clyde Young is joining RT's Kristine Frazao from Los Angeles.

@Kardiatheon NONE you STUPID MORON!! I HATE people that listen to the media! Prisoners are VERY cheap to maintain! Prison systems LIE about how much money it costs to maintain a person.It's a PERFECT way for These SHADY systems to put their CROOKED spending on someone but themselves!! The STATE is the ones RAPING us,not the prisoners!! WAKE UP IDIOT!!

Most prisons in the US have been privatized. The two biggest companies that run these private prisons (Corrections Corporation of America & Wackenhut) make their money by trading their stock on Wall Street BASED ON THE NUMBER OF INMATES THEY ARE HOUSING. Is it any wonder that the US has the highest incarceration rate of any country in the world?! It also explains the "tough on crime" rhetoric we see so often. I see so many comments willing to throw away the key without even THINKING about this!!
