April 20, 2008:Lorax was found on the ground April 4, 2005, in Pendleton, Oregon, when she was about 3 weeks old. She suffered several fractures to the right wing, and her elbow and wrist bones were damaged when she fell from her very high nest. The fractures to the radius and ulna would have been difficult to fix in an adult bird and nearly impossible in a bird this young, whose bones are still growing. An injury to or near a joint almost always results in loss of mobility, as the healing done by the body results in calcium deposits that inhibit motion. Because she was so young when taken into captivity, she is well socialized to people, which minimizes her stress levels.
Set on a wooded hillside in Eugene, Oregon, Cascades Raptor Center is a non-profit nature center and wildlife hospital specializing in birds of prey and other wildlife in their natural habitat through rehabilitation and public education. CRC displays over 60 non-releasable permanent resident birds in large outdoor enclosures.

Great vid but I wanted the owl to do something. It feels like it's lazy or something?

This is an education owl, and she is doing her job, which is sitting calmly while her handler describes her. She's a little nervous, because there is a great deal of activity around her today. The Cascades Raptor Center volunteers are involved in maintenance work: clearing paths, fixing cages, cleaning the reception area, etc. Many people walking back and forth, supplies being delivered, and all sorts of other distractions. I would give her an "A" for calm behavior!

There was a lot of activity at CRC when I filmed this video. Many volunteers were cleaning up and restoring the paths and cages. Lorax was very alert to what was going on. She was keeping an eye on everything!
