In another perfect illustration of why the U.S. tourist industry is in free fall, audio has emerged of a Canadian couple who were interrogated and arrested by immigration officials after they dared to inquire as to why they were being asked such pointless and invasive questions.

Attempting to enter the U.S. at the Niagara Falls border, the couple were asked where they were going, to which they responded the Niagara Falls shopping mall. When the immigration official bizarrely demanded to know what shops they were planning to visit, the situation quickly worsened.

  • As a Canadian I have always had a harder time getting back into Canada than coming into the United States. I have personally found the U.S. border guards to be pretty reasonable and the Canadians to be total dickheads.

  • Whatever. Do these border agents talk to MEXICANS like this!

  • you should try crossing the border as a brown person

  • ive crossed the Canada/U.S.many times-have been detained shortly-my auto inspected-and questioned.simple brief truthful answers are suitable in a civilised tone and demeanor.and the experience has been pleasant.Customs Officers are just doing their job.If you are not breaking any laws-you have nothing to worry about-and you will be free to move on.

  • Uh, that's a picture of the Sarnia/Port Huron Border.

"Yes sir, no sir, if you please sir."

    Be polite, obey.

comply and tolerate. no matter what.

  • NO YOU DON'T NEED A REASON!!! SHUT THE FUCK UP AND DEAL WITH IT.. if they want to know what the fuck you grandmothers middle name is and how many times you plan on taking a shit once you cross the border., then you fucking ANSWER the question... this guy is a fucking dumbass.

  • He kept asking what "grounds" they had for detaining him. By attempting to cross an international border into a SOVEREIGN country, you're GIVING the border officers grounds to conduct a search. He was sent in to 2ndary because he wasn't taking the primary inspection seriously. It's a common tactic used by smugglers to try and distract the officer from tells in body language and voice intonation. The recording suggests that he was agitated when he got to 2ndary --- red flag #2.

  • the American tourist industry is in freefall? Canada's tourist industry is in freefall because they turn away every American with a DUI. Guess what? that entails about 80% of the adult population of this country.

  • @john48martin No,Mexicans tend to either evade US Immigration officials or try to kill them.Somehow I think that a (much) larger percentage of Mexicans crossing into the US represent a threat to this country than is the case with Canadians crossing into the US.

  • @econdrone Well, once you've proven that you're a Canadian citizen all the Canadian official cares about is that you pay taxes on anything you've bought here. The taxman's the same eveywhere...Canada,the US...I think George Harrison got it right about 45 years ago!

  • What gives the Canadian any idea that he can ask as many questions as the interviewer?
