This was on December 5, 1998. DC United from the MLS/USA faced Vasco da Gama from Brazil in Game 2 of the 1998 Interamerican Cup in Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. DC United won 2-0 and became the only United States club team to win the Interamerican Cup.

Vasco da Gama had been the champion of the Copa Libertadores on "1948" and 1998, Brazilian champion in 1974, 1984, 1997 and 2000. Only in 2011 Vasco began to play well.
