Scrambling eggs in a cast iron skillet can be easy and so can the clean up!

Note:I have cooked these eggs about 30 seconds longer than I like them. Because of health reasons, they are cooked through for this demonstration.

Just a bit of patience in pre-heating (the heat setting is 2 1/2-3 on the electric stove top) and preparing the pan, the right temperature and clean up procedure, and those of you who thought only a non-stick pan could do this job, may have just found a new healthier method!

  • That was just a battered omlette?

  • @IVIerkBlitz possibly! but you need to let the eggs solidify a little on the bottom to turn them successfully

  • cast iron can get overly hot for eggs. Carbon steel has better heat manipulation. Cast iron once hot stays hot. FOr heat manipulation cooking cast iron inst the best choice. CArbon steel is better for that

  • @210482fmj you are right, it is tricky, but this is why it is heated slowly on low heat.

Also, I sometimes take it off the heat as cast iron holds heat for a long time, and cook it off the heat, return it for a few minutes as needed

  • Do you use soap to wash your skillet? Won't it be unhygienic? (Sorry, I don't mean to be rude but I've been taught to wash everything with soap to be thoroughly clean.)

  • @tubreeze I know how you feel, I had to get used to this concept. No, a seasoned cast iron pan should never be washed with soap! Google this or go to Lodge cast iron. My grandmother had trouble with this concept also. She would try to wash my grandfather's cast iron with soap (he was a chef) and he had a fit! Use very hot or even boiling water to clean. The seasoned surface provides a coating , soap would just stick to it, and ruin the cooking surface.

  • I've been using cast iron now for 5 years and will never buy a Teflon or similar type pan again.

    CAST IRON RULES ;-)

  • Non-stick cookware will never be as fun (or as safe) as cast iron.

  • ya,even if anything () was in a pan not washed with soap, i doubt it would survive those temperatures anyway.

  • @tubreeze You can scrub it out with kosher salt and rinse with hot water. Because you always want to preheat a cast iron skillet before using it, you're killing off any bacteria that may be on it.

  • @dkhalevskyy You have not let the pan heat up enough. Add the oil after the pan has heated on medium low heat for about 5 minutes, and heat another minute.
