ABSOLUTE SCORES BIG FOR ALLSTATE AND MEXICAN SOCCER STAR "MEMO"

This one-of-a-kind spot for Allstate brought Absolute to Mexico City to work with the country's star goalkeeper, Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa. The resulting: 30, Wall, is an amalgamation of more than 80 live-action saves, Flame work, and CG.

Behind the scenes, post-production considerations began even before filming started.

"As soon as I arrived in Mexico City, I got behind a camera and filmed a stand-in goalie making as many saves and from as many angles as possible," said Dirk Greene, Lead Flame Artist at Absolute. "From this footage, we made a composite shot to act as a reference so we'd know exactly what angles we needed Memo to cover when we came to shoot him"

For the shoot with Memo, the team fitted a time slice rig with 90 cameras at different heights to allow them to get a sweeping shot that got closer to the ground as it moved. Using a variety of shutter speeds, they were able to capture different speeds of action for the time-sliced shots. Three additional cameras on the pitch captured even more slow motion action. They lowered a black curtain behind the goal to obscure the training ground facilities and to act as a base for an obscured stadium crowd that would be built in Maya and be populated with a CG crowd using Massive software. As Director Gerard de Thame filmed, the Absolute team built frames to see what they had and what they still needed, refining their vision as they worked.

"At first, the idea was to get 15 or 16 shots of Memo for the final spot," said Greene. "During the editing process, that evolved considerably as we filled the frame with more and more shots of Memo making these breath-taking saves."

Once editorial was complete, the VFX team got to work, collaborating with Gerard and the agency creatives as they added flags, smoke and extra atmosphere to the CG stadium. Using Massive software, Minh and his team were able to create the figures that comprised the hazy, atmospheric crowd and built in crowd reactions to match each of the shots. The software was also heavily used in Gloves, the second spot of this Allstate campaign, to build a huge CG crowd into a shot of an empty stadium with Memo.

All of these techniques helped build the final spot that shows Memo covering the entire goal at once, acting as a wall of fierce protection.
