  • The Model 1 (with the High Definition Graphics logo, and both with and without the TMSS) sounds better than the model 2.

  • I had a megadrive 2, the sound was much more clearer.

  • @cosmonal Everybody knows that Model 1 Pre-TMSS is the best model.

  • @XBladenoJutsu At least on this video, the hihat is NOT the same frequency. Not only the volume on the mix, but its lower frequency than the second one (a bit, but I can perceive that on my headphone, listening very closely). Thus making the latter music played on this video (note that I'm not talking about the chips models, I'm just pointing out the better sounding on THIS VIDEO) a little better.

  • @cosmonal Nono, the Hihat is the same frequency for both because it's playing from the SN76489 PSG chip, not the YM2612 FM chip. Since the FM chip was changed to a modified YM3438 to save money, the quality of the sound went down and the volume levels of the FM are lower, allowing you to hear that Hihat playing from the SN76489 easier. I'm not saying to like the one using the YM2612, I'm just pointing out why you can hear the PSG channels better in the later models.

  • @XBladenoJutsu It is a low frequency hi-hat on the first test, that's why I say "you can't hear". There's no space for that hi hat there, should be a higher frequency one -- like the second test. There you can hear a better hi hat, because of its higher frequency sound. The second test shows a better sounding music, for sure - its just lower on volume, but like I said, the general volume is irrelevant (you just compensate on your final amp). The hi hat is higher frequency, that makes it better.

  • @cosmonal It isn't that the volume is lower, it's because the VA4 model 2 hasn't got the YM2612, so the audio differences between the Frequency Modulation vs the PSG sounds is different than a model 1 that isn't a VA7. The PSG noise is making the hihat sounds, but if you listen, you can still hear it on the VA6 model 1 test. It is obvious that a VA6 model 1 sounds better than a VA4 model 2. An interesting test would be a VA2 model 1 vs VA2 model 2 haha.

  • I think the system itself was not designed to be an audiophile device so these tests although interesting are irrelevant and that game was certainly developed on model 1 hardware

  • Model 1 has better sound and model 2 has slightly better video. You will notice faint lines with both models but model 2 is less noticeable and sound will be more clear and crisp on model 1 and slightly muffled on model 2. Use an av cable(not the rf) for both systems and you shall see the difference. The best game to compare audio and video is hellfire.

  • people really rag on the genesis sound chip, but from this test, hell its great either way :D
