I love this animation, its beautifully done, especially considering its age

its about the state imposed cummunist propoganda and censorship (the fog) of the time. The white, beautiful horse represents hidden truth. The hedgehog is terrified under constant threat from the bat, elephant etc. (state fear and control) but seeks truth. the salmon helps but is hidden, like anyone outspoken about communism (underground resistance)...

The animation was banned in russia when it was first made as although it very cleverly told its narrative, it was widely understood.

You need to watch closely to understand the meaning of the story.
At the beginning, when the hedgehog is talking to himself, he's predicting what will happen when he gets to the bear's house. This means he has made the same journey enough times to know exactly what will happen. This time is different because he went out of his way, and because of that he lived a small adventure. He experienced fear, kindness and even had a near death experience, all of which has changed the way he sees life.

That owl is so scary looking... i mean, just look at it!

A sweet story, but I can't seem to figure out the point of it. Okay, so it's about a hedgehog in the fog, sure, but folktales often contain some kind of hidden meaning and this one I don't get.

Dhrtastrachka is an endearing version of Dhrtastra. Just like Yozhik to Yozh.

It should probably be Дртараштра, it's the name of a character in the Mahabharata.
